ORSAK GREETS PRESIDENT
ACEC/National was honored to have President George W. Bush speak at their recent Annual Conference & Legislative Summit. Bush's remarks touched on continue tax relief for America's small businesses, the
strength and growth of the U.S. economy, and better education standards and practices in America's schools. The President used the occasion to urge Congress to pass a multibillion-dollar bill extending tax cuts for businesses and families...especially at a time of soaring gas prices. "If the people have their way who want this tax relief to expire, the American people will be hit $2.4 trillion in higher taxes over the next decade," he said. Debby Orsak, Cagley & Associates and ACEC/MW President, attended the President's address and after his remarks, she had the opportunity to be photographed and speak with him for a few moments as he was exiting the room.

METRO WASHINGTON TO PLAN MINI-CCD
The President's address to the ACEC/National Annual Convention & Legislative Summit last week pre-empted the Congressional visitations that most of ACEC/MW's members had planned to make as part of the 2006 ACEC Consulting Congress Day (CCD). ACEC/MW traditionally meets with ACEC/MD and ACEC/V to call on each state's Senators and often holds joint meetings on the House side as well, in addition to meeting with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. The ACEC/MW Legislative Committee, realizing the value of Congressional visits, will now undertake to plan a "Mini-CCD" specifically for ACEC/MW members. Current discussion centers on having a briefing lunch for visiting teams on Capitol Hill and then scheduling meetings with Congressmen and their staff members in the afternoon. More information will be made available to ACEC/MW members as plans are developed.
TOP 10 BUSINESS TRENDS
What are the most important business issues facing firms over the next 5 years? According to the 2006/2007 Design and Construction Industry Trends Survey, they are 1) Lack of Qualified Engineers, 2) Ownership/Leadership Transitions, and 3) Cost of Healthcare. Paul Haglund, Greeley and Hanson, and Jill Holcomb, ACEC/National, presented some of the findings of the soon-to-be published Industry
Trends Survey at the ACEC Annual Convention & Legislative Summit. The Survey measured important elements of business performance, markets, and practice areas and will present a broad assessment of these areas. The report should be available in late May or early June. ACEC/MW member firms ordering before May 31 will receive a special discount price of $199. Contact Jackie Pysarchuk, ACEC Publications Coordinator, jpysarchuk@acec.org , to place your order at this special rate.

The participants will discuss the purpose, mission, and goals of a committee, as well as identifying projects or issues that would encourage participation. Participants will also discuss areas of interest for each of their companies and how such a committee could represent and promote the business interests and professional development of our member consulting engineering firms in the Metropolitan Washington region. The roundtable will be moderated by Philios Angelides, Alpha Corporation, and ACEC/MW President Elect. Questions on the roundtable may be addressed to James H. Johnson, ACEC/MW Executive Director.
