ACEC/MW Inaugural Scholarship Golf Tournament a Success!

What better way to beat the COVID blues than by spending a socially-distant day on the links networking with industry friends in the name of scholarship! ACEC/MW kicked off its inaugural Scholarship Golf Tournament at 1757 Golf Club in Dulles, Virginia on Wednesday, October 14.  The weather could not have been better; the crisp morning transitioned to a gorgeous fall day with blue skies and warm temperatures.  More than 80 golfers filled the course and contributed to raffles and other activities. 


The scholarship golf outing was an initiative of ACEC/MW President, Pedro Capestany of AECOM, and the Scholarship Golf Committee was chaired by Jenny Bowers of Michael Baker, International.  

There were many ACEC/MW member firms who committed sponsorships and golf teams toward the event and many individual volunteers who helped make the day a success. Thanks to the generosity of our golfers and sponsors, we raised almost $15,000 for ACEC/MW's scholarship fund!


Whether sponsor, player, or volunteer, we sincerely appreciate everyone's contribution to the success of the event.


Although all participants were winners in our eyes for helping to grow the scholarship fund, there were some awards and bragging rights earned:

First Place Team – ECS Mid-Atlantic: Randy Wirt, Michael Galli, Darell Fischer, Mike Yasek


Second Place Team – EBA Engineering & Guests: Kevin Kreis (EBA Engineering), Richard McDonough (Lane Construction), Bob Carpenter (University of Maryland, Baltimore County), Dennis Morrison (Volkert)


Third Place Team – Atkins Global: Arthur Jones-Dove, Andre Joyner, Daven Oswalt, Mike Marsjanik


Men's Closest to the Pin – Richard McDonough, Lane Construction


Women's Closest to the Pin – Erin Donovan, T3 Design


Men's Longest Drive – Greg Wellman, Accumark (accepted on his behalf by Tara McCarthy)

Author Bryan C. Layman, P.E., L.P.S.S.,A.O.S.E.,LEED AP is Vice President of ECS Mid-Atlantic, LLC and Chantilly Branch Manager.  He has over 30 years (33.5) of experience in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Materials Testing.  Current professional organization leadership positions include ACEC/MW Vice President, ACEC (National) GeoProfessional Coalition BOD, ASCE Geotechnical Committee Executive Member, and Fairfax County Engineering Standards Review Committee Member.  He graduated from Virginia Tech (Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Emphasis).
